COVO's Approach
COVO’s approach draws inspiration from thinkers like L.S. Vygotsky and Jean Piaget and educators Paulo Freire and Tsunesaburo Makiguchi who believed in the role of education to advance social change by empowering students and educators to develop ownership and responsibility.
COVO’s signature pedagogies are creativity, participation and sustainability.
Creativity
We believe every child, young person and adult has the right to develop their full potential and that education and creativity are the key. We use play, drama, movement, music and visual art to make education accessible to different learning styles. We promote creativity and the therapeutic benefits of the arts as powerful tools for building relationships, breaking down barriers and facilitating dialogue.
Participation
COVO uses a holistic approach to involve children, young people, parents and staff in the development of projects and decision-making. We consult individuals, groups and organizations to find solutions themselves and believe this is the most effective way of sustaining change over time. Enabling adults and children to take responsibility and be part of decision making is key to creating an environment which is conducive to learning and development. Adopting this approach results in organizations working together more effectively and consistently towards a common goal. It also requires people in positions of leadership to become learners themselves.
Sustainability
COVO uses a systemic approach to promote analysis and action across the whole of a system rather than just one part of it; an approach that enables us to identify and influence key interrelationships that affect behaviour over time. We responds to the needs of organizations so that students, teachers and parents take an active part in the development and implementation of change. We support organizations strengthen communication and responsibility and develop their capacity to effect and maintain positive changes that are sustainable in the long term.
